Big Girl Bed

Yes, she is well over three years old, but Rosalie loves sleeping, and she loved sleeping in her crib. We definitely didn't want to fix what wasn't broken, but in the end it was time to graduate to the land of the big kid bed.

We bought a twin mattress and bedsprings, and since this was just training, we didn't get a frame yet. We were a little nervous for the switchover--seriously, we didn't want to mess with that girl's sleep--but it all turned out great and she's still snoozing strong.

I guess I could have made the bed up before taking the picture, but this is a wee bit closer to reality. Reality is cuter than fiction.

Speaking of which, today we were eating lunch and I was asking her what her cherry tomato tasted like. She said, "Chocolate." I tasted one to see if I could figure out what she meant. Well, it was sweet and almost rich & full-bodied. I could almost detect what she was talking about. Plus sometimes chocolate can be a little sour. Then we started eating carrots and I asked her what that tasted like, and she confided in me almost conspiratorially, "There's a little honey in there." So cool! I could DEFINITELY taste a sort of sweet, light honey taste in the young carrot. She told me she tasted it with her "taste buns."

Well, that experience was so fun that I asked her later this evening what her nori tasted like (we were eating sushi and she suddenly couldn't get enough of the nori, so I pulled some out for her to eat). She said, "Butter." Man, I have no idea how she got from seaweed to butter. But I don't care! It is so fun talking to this kid with a brand new--and acutely sensitive--palate! It's like a culinary student's heaven to have a kid like that.

She has been into sending letters lately. When she was visiting Mom at the farm a few weeks back, she made my birthday card and Mom promised her that she'd send it to me near my birthday. It was way cool to get a card from my kid at birthday time! She also wanted to send a card to her school--to all of her friends--to tell them how much she loves them. So she made a card and we mailed it to school.

Random act of generosity: This week my friends brought dinner over (also for the birthday) and her friend Owain was here playing with her cars, but then it was time for them to go home. He was bummed out to leave, so Rosalie told him to pick a car. He did, and she said he could take it home with him. Lovely girl!

Easter & Easel

We are lucky to live on a block that has lots of kids. To add to that, we also live across the street from a family whose mom runs a preschool. She has he best yardsales. Actually, a bunch of families usually get together and sell stuff, making it better. Because I'm in school right now, we did not participate, BUT we did make some key purchases, including an easel.

Rosalie is an experienced painter from her time at Berry Patch, so she even knows how to fill up her own paint cups and everything. Here she's painted a piece that she calls "A red caboose lost in the night sea!"
In case you don't know, she's showing us which part is the red caboose. I find this to be a very intriguing painting with an equally intriguing name.

Last weekend was Easter. Rosalie had a couple of buddies over and we had an Easter egg hunt in the living room (because it was raining outside). They are so much more experienced with hunting for Easter eggs this year! We had such a calm and orderly hunt that we did more than one round of hunting. Here, Rosalie's waiting in the hallway with her friends Owain and Tyler. I was quite impressed how patiently they waited until Owain's little brother Jimmy came up the stairs from the basement where they played while we hid the eggs, and they gave him a little head start each time.
